Evaluation Question 4

NOTE: You may have to pause at times in order to read the text that appears on screen.

Evaluation Question 3

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

From starting our project we had two in school opportunities to get feedback on our ideas and product from other people. The first opportunity we had was during the research and planning stage where we got to pitch out ideas to others and given them feedback paper slips for them to fill out.

As it was such an early stage in the project the feedback slips only consisted of only three questions:
- What ideas did you like?
- What ideas didn't you like?
- What can we improve on?

Even though the questionnaire was brief it proved successful in giving the information we needed before beginning the production of our project. The most useful question we asked was the last one 'What can we improve on?', most people gave very good responses ranging from adding a shot to specific scene to suggesting another editing technique. Over all the response was well and the audience and also our target audience (teenagers) like the pitch. This meant our target audience had faith in our ideas and this gave us more confidence to explore our levels of creativity further.

Feedback 2

The second time that we got the opportunity to showcase our product was at a post production stage, we had a meeting in the schools hall, where our music video was shown, as the audience in the hall consisted of other media students and extra people that came along we had plenty of people to gain feedback off. This time round I constructed a more specific questionnaire that was oriented around our music video. The questionnaire contained the following questions:

- What type of music video do you think it is?
- Was the lip syncing successful?
- Was the purpose of the black and white scenes and colour scenes clear?
- Do you think the locations were interesting?
- Did you like the shots used?
- Do you think our music video met the conventions of music videos?
- How could we improve our music video?
-Any other comments...

This was a strong questionnaire as it made the audience think about every aspect of the music video and comment on them.

Positive points

The majority of the feedback we received form out audience was positive. The advantages of receiving possitive feedback with detail, let i know what worked well in our music video, so we could use that technique/shot again in any future production we made create. We could also gather what was a more popular aspect of the music video, one scene that did seem to to get more comments on than others was the hand held camera scene and how the perspective jumps into the hand held camera.

Negative points

I personally feel that negative points are more important than the positive ones as it gives me incentive to improve my work and broaden my creativity. The most criticised aspect of our music video was the locations, it appears that some of the locations were not interesting enough "Could have found a better location than a living room", I agree with this comment as it was a dull location, we had originally planned for it to be filmed in a restaurant but the idea caused too many problems and was discarded. Another comment was "a bit blurry" i feel this comment was irrelevant as the quality of the cameras was out of my hands and we made the best out of what we were given.

Quotes

"Really Creative"
"Nice use of colourisation"
"Decent Storyline"
"Could have used more locations'
"Could have been longer"

Evaluation Question 2

Evaluation Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

During the course of of this media project, I have referred to the forms and conventions of real music videos in order to achieve professional music video. Specifically I have used Andrew Goodwin’s theory in which he deems that there are several factors that make up a music video. By following these principals it helped me create more legitimate final product, and not just in our music video, our ancillary task too. However we were not afraid to challenge these conventions created by Goodwin or general music videos and we were determined to make our music video as original as possible.

Genre Characteristics
As the genre for our used band was acoustic/pop/rock we had a selection of ways in which we could go about conforming to those genre characteristics.

You could argue that we challenged a convention of genre characteristics in rock because of our neglect of creating a performance based music video, which is what is usually expected of a song that features instruments like guitars and drums.

Instead we went with a narrative based music video (which conformed to the pop genre within our chosen band) in response to what we thought the meaning behind the song was, a complex relationship between two people. Another way in which we conformed to the conventions of pop was the fact we heavily included and advertised the ‘Artist’ which is a common characteristic in pop music.

Relationship between lyrics and visuals

We have included a subtle relationship between lyrics and visuals in our music video, the reasons behind why we didn’t have a consistent relationship between lyrics and visuals is because we wanted to make the music video as original as possible whilst staying true to the context of the song. A relationship between can be seen between lyrics and visuals at the beginning of the music video where the lyrics “You try so hard to put on that brave smile that you ain’t got” appear, you see the female lead in the music video give a false smile.

gif maker online
"You try so hard to put on that brave smile that you ain't got"

Relationship between music and visuals

The relationship between music and visuals is a far more predominant feature in our music video, a reoccurrence of lip syncing features in our music video, we thought this was necessary because with our music video being in a feature film style, the inclusion of lip syncing would remind the viewer that they are still watching a music video.

We also included on beat transitions within the music video, this proved challenging to achieve as we had to work out the time between beats and crop scenes to fit between these beats but it created a professional final product.

Star Image Motif

Including a star image motif in music videos is a demand by record labels as it brands the artist music. Therefore we created a star image motif through close-ups of the ‘Artist’ our star image motif had to feature in the ancillary tasks as well in the music video, so when designing the ancillary I ensured that the ‘Artist’ himself was heavily featured on the album and the poster. Which resulted in me photo editing three images of the artist into one single photo.

Another motif that we had was the reoccurrence of the tunnel that originally featured in the music video, we then went on to take all the ancillary task photos at the same location which created the motif.

The Tunnel - Seen in our music video, poster and album heavily featuring our 'Artist'

The Use Of Intertextuality

We challenged this convention as our music video didn’t make reference to another text, we had decided that we wanted an entirely original music video that had a traditional love film style to it. We felt our idea was strong enough to not have to rely on the reference of other texts to make it interesting.

Editing effects that is typical of the genre

We used a variety of editing effects in our music, most of which were in favour of what you’d expect to see in the genre of music. The first and most important editing effect we included was the use of lip syncing, this feature is common in all music genres, let alone our own. So it was crucial we include it.

We also used a fast cut montage in our music video, which we made sure was done subtly as we felt the mood and meaning of the song didn’t match and require the use of a fast cut montage. With it done so subtly it ensured it was tasteful when featuring in our music video. Therefore if could be said we challenged a convention including a fast cut montage, but we still had the songs characteristics in mind when we added it.

Another editing effect we used was the use of black and white colourisation, this effect is a rather typical feature that is seen in music videos with the theme of love - as ours does.

Conclusion

After comparing Goodwin’s principals to our music video and looking at the ways we conformed and challenged the conventions of music videos and the genre characteristics of our song, I can conclude that we created a balance between the two. In some aspects we conformed which had the sole purpose to remind the audience what type of song they are listening to etc. And we challenged because we wanted to make a more original piece that would have been hard to typecast and predict.

Music Video Camera Work and Editing

This post will be dedicated to a variety the camera work techniques we used and why we used them, also it will include a variety of the editing techniques we used and why we used them. I will refer to Goodwin's Principles (where applicable) in the analysis of these techniques.

Camera Work

Shot 5

This image could not be uploaded onto the presentation slide because it's a GIF image, this means I have taken still frames from the music video and layered them for a stop motion animation affect. Reasons why I chose to do this was because it demonstrates the 360 shot better than a still image would. This isn't the entire 360 shot, I did not reconstruct the entire shot only a fraction of it.

NOTE: This GIF Image is only a rough demonstration of the 360 shot that is in the music video, therefore it does not reflect the speed, fluency or quality that features in the final product.

Filming Diary and Problems we faced

Before we started filming we knew our actors availability was restricted, so we had ensure we were prepared to film as much as we could when we could.

Filming Session 1: The first filming session we had consisted of shooting all the scenes that included only the male lead/Artist. This included 3 filming locations; Alfie's car, Olly's house and an underpass tunnel. Whilst filming we purposefully filmed much more than we needed to as well as filming from as many angles as possible. Even though we planned what we filmed, we still shot a lot of the ideas we had at the time. Almost all of the scenes we shot included the male lead lip syncing to the music, to ensure that the actors singing was in time with the songs track we played the song whilst filming.

Filming Schedule 2: Our second filming session included all three actors that features in the music video. We filmed in two locations; Olly's house for flashback scenes and down a grassy lane beside a river. For one of the scenes we needed a second camera for a creative effect, which we were able to do very successfully. Again we did not ignore our spontaneous ideas we gathered whilst filming as some of the footage we took was not planned and worked well. However we did encountered a problem after re watching the footage, some of the scenes we felt were unusable as they didn't meet the quality standard we expected to achieve. With this we had to plan a reshoot at a later date, but as stated above actor availability was tight, so we had to ensure we were 100% prepared before finding another slot to film.

Filming Schedule 3: With the third and what we thought was the last filming session just being reshoots, we hoped to get it done rather quickly but when the time came to actually re film we realised there would now be other scenes we'd have to reshoot for continuity issues. We successfully managed to film what we wanted and went on to edit it all together.

New Ideas: Whilst we were editing there was a huge snow fall and we thought we could use it to our advantage, as the 'Make up and Break up' of the onscreen couple was written to have a large gap in time we that thought having snow in the mise-en-scene would be a great way to represent that time had passed from the couple breaking up and getting back together. This idea went onto our fourth and final shooting session.

Filming Schedule 4: For this filming schedule we wrote in some new scenes to include the new snowy scenary, and an updated ending to match.

Ancillary Task - Magazine Advert

Our Magazine Advert

Features on our poster:
- Magazine quotes
- iTunes advert
- Our song acknowledgement
- Star images - Artist and Tunnel
-House Colours - Blue, Green and brown
- Typography white

Paramore

This is Paramore's Tour date poster, the purpose of the poster is to advertise the bands 2008 UK Riot Tour. The first thing I noticed when looking that this poster was that the image used matches the name of the tour - Riot, there is a cartoon riot featured in the poster. The house colours of the poster would be black, white and red (warm colours), the text that features in the poster match each other using similar fonts and colours.

Ancillary Task - CD Cover

For our CD cover I wanted to use Alfies image as he features in the music video and so he will become our star image motif. As I thought just having the star on the front cover, I felt I had to raise the bar and make it more interesting and unique. In the endI came up with the idea of having more than one Alfie (the star) in one photo. Having experience with photo editing software I felt I could easily achieve this. The next thing that we needed to think of was the location of the album cover, and we decided on a location featured in the music video. It was an underpass with graffiti and artwork all over the walls.
Front Cover
In order to have multiple Alfies in one shot I mounted a digital camera on a tripod and took three photos in the same possition but had Alfie move position. I would then take these three photos and layer them creating a seamless single photo. Once I had acheived this I placed the bands (The Nites) logo on the album to ensure people can see who the album belongs too. I then added the albums title in a similar font as the bands logo to ensure I stayed true to the bands identity.
Back Cover
For the back cover I wanted to have the same image but from behind at the other end of the tunnel, after going through the same process as the front cover I then added additional features such as a barcode, listing the song titles that feature on the album, then added copyright information, record label (fictional) and place of creation. All these features gave the album a truly authentic look.

Our Pitch

We pitched our idea to the rest of the class, by doing this we were able to receive feedback on how we could do to improve our music video. Our class was also encouraged to the list the features of our idea they like because by knowing this we knew what an audience likes to see and we could use more of that. The key part of our pitch that people were impressed with was that we were able to give a detailed explanation of our new idea very shortly after we changed our project artist.

Here is our pitch:

Thursday

Location Shots and why we used them + Target Audience

Location Shots and why we used them
We have chosen several suitable locations for our music video, since we have decided to shoot a 'Feature Film' style music video we need to include quite a varitety of places, to acheive a devloped plot in our music video. The locations that we have used include (please note these locations are not in order of appearance):

1. Alfies car - Reasons why we used alfies car as a location is because we could use a diverse range of creative camera shots. The angles we acheived for this location were, an over the shoulder shot of whilst Alfie (music video character) was driving, a meduim low angle shot which was filmed from the passangers side on the dashboard faceing the driver, we filmed through the windscreen onto the road to give the 'moving vehicle' effect.

2. Olly's Living Room & street - We filmed a couple of shots at this location for a 'Match on Action' effect, these shots featured an extreme close-up, low-angle shot.

3. River Side shot - We thought the scenery of at the riverside shot was great, as it was secluded and that emphasised the 'togetherness' of the couple. Also we could get many shots done from the location as room wasn't an issue

4. The Tunnel(Underpass) - We needed a range of locations for the artist to feature in alone, so we brainstormed as many locations we could think of that are interesting enough and the the underpass was easily one of the most interesting, the range of colours, the graffiti everything was great. Also as it was an underpass we could get a really could high angle shot from above it.

5. Amys House and road - We needed a second house in the plot - the female character's house so we thought it would be suitable to just use the actresses house. It was in an accessible location with a long street out side, perfect for a long shot.

6. The Church - the towns church is in the centre of our hometown Hitchin so it was perfect to get a busy shot with great scenery. Also we wanted to get a shot of a group of birds soaring through the air, and we knew that this location was the place for the job.

Target Audience

Seeing as we felt that the song we chose to use was about a typical love story, it was safe to presume it's a universal concept. So we had the advantage of creating a target audience from scratch. After discussion we decided that a younger audience would be most suitable as it's the type audience we know best. We could use our own knowledge and ideas of friends of how we could create this project for a younger audience. An example; of how we did this was using younger actors to feature in the music videos rather than adults.

Problems Which Resulted In Us Changing Our Project

When we took on the challenge of creating a spoof music video rather than the usual music video, we knew it was a risky idea due to fact there would be a fine line between the music video being funny and a success, to not funny and looking like we didn't take the project seriously. Even with this risk we carried on to plan our music video because we wanted to be as different as possible, but as we planned the video, we realized how bigger risk it was and decided to change due to us not wanting to appear like we didn't take the project seriously.

We are aware of the new risk of changing project at such a late stage, but we find it would be for the best, now we fully intent to work as hard as possible to get back on track with a more serious project, whilst trying to capture the originality we initially set out to achieve.

Our New Project

We have changed our choice of artist to a band called The Nites, a pop-rock band. The song we have chosen to use is called 'Whatever gets you through'

Song Lyrics

Due to our song being a recording of a free style it contains various features that would need to be edited out in order for it to be a more presentable song; these features would include unwanted pauses in the song. We will use editing software in order to achieve these alterations to the song. Here is the lyrics of the song we intend to keep:

I said 'Oi you are you gonna bang doe?'
No I want some fuckin' Nando's
I wanna eat up with chicken and chips
Everyone knows I free style like this

When I free style on the beat about chicken
You know it's finger lickin'
And I'm gonna pass it over to Example now
And he's gonna free style and show you how he-

Chicken, chicken wings,
They're my favorite things
And I love to sing

I say chicken, chicken wings
If you give me them,
I will eat them tings

Nando's from me
Fat chance I got a black card
If you come to be and ask for chicken
You'll get a fat scar in your left cheek
I eat Nando's every week

Some time on a tuesday
Some time on a thursday
I get free drinks,
refillable for when I'm thirsty
On a Thursday
I eat chicken in the worst way

I love Nando's more than you're mum does
More than you're mum does
I say oh my tongue is on fire
Is say Nando's I desire

Our Music Video Project

For our music video project we have decided to use an online youtube video featuring an unsigned artist known as Ed Shearen, the video contains the artist performing a free style comedy song with artist Example about the chicken restaurant Nando's. We are going to adapt the freestyle into a more presentable song then attach to a music video that we will make. The music video will be of spoof value as we feel it will match the mood of the song.

Album Cover- Ancillary Task Research

Avenged Sevenfold - Nightmare

The artwork for the Album 'Nightmare' by Avenged Sevenfold features a darker range of colours which successfully matches the albums themes and title 'nightmare'. The artwork also features the bands name in a white font which makes the name stand out and let the viewer know who the band is right away, the bands name also written in the their personal font. Avenged Sevenfold has an 'brand logo' known as the Death Bat (Which is a human skull with bat wings) which has featured throughout all their work, this album features an altered version of the Death Bat but this time it is shown as a grim reaper type figure, the use of an altered version of the Death Bat gives the album a unique style yet stays true to the bands identity. The image on the cover is of a girl in bed thats in a strange environment looking scared, this is done to match the image to the albums title 'Nightmare' as the girl featured is clearly having one. A final feature on the albums cover is a gravestone that reads 'foREVer' this in reference to the bands drummer Jimmy 'The Rev' Sullivan who past away a couple months prior to the albums completion and release.

Blink-182 - The Mark, Tom and Travis Show

This album uses a wide selection of bright colours which are to resemble the lights that you would see at a live gig, which is relevant as the album is a recording of a live performance by Blink-182. The image used on the album also shows that the album is a live performance as it features a cartoon version of the band performing to a crowd.

Having a Niche

It's important for any up and coming band or artist to have a niche, this is to separate them from any other band or artist around and give them a unique brand identity, which would be highly beneficial for any pre-signed artist whowants to get themselves heard.

Blink-182 is a great example of a band who created a niche/image which got them to where they are today. Today they are notorious for their use of humor in their work and that is what got them known in the first place. Their humorous stage antics is what made them stand out during a low profile gig and get signed by a record company.

Even today they are still including a variety of fresh gags in their live gigs, not only that but they also go as far as changing the speed of their songs and changing the lyrics for comic effect. In 2000 they released a live album titled 'The Mark, Tom and Travis show' which allows the listener to experience what Blink 182 are like live, also the album features all the skits involved in the show for the listeners amusement.

The bands famous humor isn't just shown in their live gigs, but they have also released goof songs that contain a lot of expletives and toilet humor. These songs include 'Family Reunion' and 'Happy Holidays, You Bastard' which only serve the purpose of making the listener laugh.

Another way in which Blink-182 have expressed their sense of humor is through their music videos. The majority of their music videos are of comedic value, their most notable music video would be 'All The Small Things' in which the band parody a typical boy band music video and variety of other artists and their music videos, these artists include: Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Other music videos of theirs include them parodying a previous (which included the members of the band jogging down a public street naked) music video of theirs by using dwarfs in the roles of themselves.

A few screenshots of Blink-182's 'All The Small Things' Music video

Music videos 'What's My Age Again' and it's parody 'Man Overboard'

Bands such as Fall Out Boy, New Found Glory, Paramore, Good Charlotte, All Time Low and many more have taken inspiration from Blink-182's attitude and image and used it to create their own work.

Band Websites

Bullet For My Valentine
The first thing you notice when you enter Bullet For My Valentine's website is the sites background, which is the cover of their latest album 'Fever', this is an affective design point as it immediately advertises their latest product to the site visitor. Secondly the site features a direct link to the bands store where you can purchase their latest work and/or any previous work they've made. The web designer has made the link to their store stands out by making the links font colour (red) different from the sites background and other site features (Green/Grey). The homepage also features a site navigation menu in the top right, which is also made to stand out so that the site user can find what they want with ease. Other features of the site include a live Twitter and news feed, which a very useful feature as it enables this sites visitor/ the bands fans to keep a close relationship with the band and know what they are working on. Further features of the site include an online mp3 player of the bands music which is a key features for a band's website as it enables the page user to listen and have a taste of what the band's music is like before they go on to make a purchase. Final features of the immediate page include a tour date feed and a variety of their music videos which has the purpose of allowing people to have a more visual experience of the bands style and image.

Beyonce
When I visited Beyonce's website I knew very little about the artist and nowI know a lot not only about her music career but her other careers in film and fashion too as well as much more. Therefore it iseasy to say that the website is very effective and is a success in it's purpose of advertising the artist in as many ways as possible. I will list and comment on the main conventions of the website which gave it such success. Firstly when you arrive on the website Beyonce's music automatically starts to play, which forces it's visitor to listen and enjoy her music. The theme of thesite is of her latest album 'I am... Sasha Fierce', with that album being in black and grey the website has taken on the same colour scheme. Also the homepage is titled with her latest album and has a running slideshow of pictures of Beyonce which feature on the album cover or inside the album. The site also features a menu bar to other aspects of her website which include: music, photos, fashion, films, a purchase section and many many more. It is helpful and effective that there are manydifferent section asit enables the site visitor to find what they want with ease. Other aspects of the homepage include a live news and blog feed which help her fans keep up with what Beyonce is doing, the homepage also advertises other products by Beyonce such as her own fragrance known as 'Beyonce Heat'. The site also features a poll for the fans such as their favorite song etc. having this allows Beyonce to get feed back from her fans and use it to construct further music.

Paramore
Out of all the websites I have looked at Paramore's website was the busiest, their homepage alone was full of great features. Just like previous websites the colour scheme of this one was matching to their latest album 'Brand New Eyes', how ever it is not apparent that the colour scheme is in relation to their latest album as unlike previous websites there isn't any advertisement for their most recent album on their homepage. The Bands title/logo (Butterfly) is heavily featured throughout their site, also the homepage is divided into sections that serve different purposes ranging from a merchandise store which shows the site is taking advantage of the modern technology in their marketing to a Twitter feed. The website also features a great feature called 'Paramore Mobile Stream' which has taken the highly used 'news feed' a step further by using their phones to upload pictures and videos of themselves too keep in touch with their fans.

Close-ups of the Artists and Start Image Motifs

With all artist, regardless of genre take no a unique selling point which will feature in their products and most importantly their music videos. There are two different ways an artist can have a unique selling point, the first being using their own image on their work or taking on a star image motif. Examples of a star image motif could vary from an artist logo or simply a style inwhich they use in their music videos.

Intertexuality In Music Videos

Intertextuality is when a music video is made as a reconstruction or recreation of an existing form of media. The forms of media that have been used in music videos are television, film, videogames and other music videos. Here are some examples:

Film in Music Videos
30 Seconds to Mars - The Kill
- This Music video is made in referenceto the film 'The Shining' starring Jack Nicholson. It is set is in a hotel, where all the band members play the role of Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) as they reconstruct some of the famous scenes in 'The Shining'
30 Seconds to Mars Version and The Shining's Version
Madonna - Material girl
- This music video is made in reference to the 1949 movie 'Diamonds Are a Girls Best friend' starring Marilyn Monroe. A similarity between the music video and the movie is one scene where Marilyn Monroe and Madonna are dressed in a pink dress and have blond hair with curls. Also in this scene they are both being lifted by men in suits.
Madonna's Version and Movie Version

TV in Music Videos
Beastie Boys - Sabotage
- This music video is a spoof of an American cop show. The reference is shown through things like the use of the stereotypical 70's style cops who wear aviator glasses, have a mustache and sideburns, the use of this gives comedic effect.
Typical 70's cop and Beastie Boys Version
REM - Bad Day
- This music video portrays a typical news report where the lead singer plays the news reporter and is saying the lyrics in time with the song instead of giving an actual news report.
REM Version and Official News Version

Video Games in Music Videos
Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Californication
-This music video features an animated structure which resembles a typical video game. Each band member is shown to have a playable avatar that is shown to do several tasks that are normally seen in video games such as snowboarding and racing. Some aspects of the video resemble the popular video game 'Grand Theft Auto'
Red Hot Chilli Pepper Version and Grand Theft Auto Version

Reference to Other Music Videos in Music Videos
Cancer Bats - Sabotage
-This song is a cover of the previously mentioned Beastie Boys - Sabotage. Themusic video is a spoof of the original music video by the Beastie boys. The content of this music video is that themembers of Cancer Bats must find the Beastie Boys for them to feature in their (Cancer Bats) music video. The music video is similar to the original as it also features a lot of fast pace chase sequences. There is also a direct reference to the original music video as at the end of it, exact replicas of the 70's style cops are featured.

Fall Out Boy - This Ain't A Scene, It's An Arms Race
- Within this music video there is a spoof reference to Avenged Sevenfold's 'Seize The Day' . In Avenged Sevenfold's video lead guitarist (Synyster Gates) is featured performing the songs guitar solo on top of a coffin during a funeral, in FallOut Boys version their guitarist is shown doing the same thing but in a more humorous fashion when compared to the context of Avenged Sevenfold's version.

Types of Music videos

With the start of a new project we found it necessary to learn the basics. So we started two look at the types music videos.

The Three types we covered were:

  • Performance Based
  • Narrative Based
  • Concept Based
Performance Based

Performance based music videos feature the artists performing the song, this rather simple form of music video is commonly used in the genre of rock. An example of a performance based music video would be Green Day's 'American Idiot'

Narrative Based

Narrative based music videos typically tell a story in relation to what the song is about. An example of a Narrative based music video would be Lady GaGa's Bad Romance.

Concept Based

Concept Based music videos, don't tell a story or show the band performing the music, it is instead a more clever and original music video than the traditional types. An example of a concept based music video would be Ok-Go's Here it goes again.

Introduction

This blog will be used to show, the research and project development that resulted in the final product in my media project. This project involves the creation of a promotional package for the release of an album. I will be creating a music video for a specific artist, as well as two out of a possible three ancilliary tasks.

The ancilliary tasks include:
  • Create a website for the chosen band
  • Design and make an album cover for the chosen band
  • Create magazine cover that features the chosen band
